Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail
Approaching Tunnel Number 2

Just a highway underpass (tunnel). Not to be confused with the real tunnels that the bike path goes through :-) I'm not sure what highway we are passing under here but most of the roads that the trail crosses are county roads (with letter designations). Actually I think that this is the county-T intersection but I can't say for sure.

The Elroy Sparta engraving over the highway underpass. As I mentioned above, most of the roads that the trail crosses (either over or under) are county roads but the main road that the trail is almost always close to is Route 71.

Although you get the feel that you are out in the middle of nowhere a lot of the time, you are generally never very far from Route 71 since the trail runs fairly close to this road all the way from Sparta to Elroy.

This is the view as you approach tunnel #2, between the towns of Norwalk and Wilton.There is a slight incline here coming up to the tunnel and most of the time there is a little stream of water on either side of the trail as you approach the any of tunnels.

The entrance to tunnel #2 as you head east (towards Elroy) from Sparta, Wisconsin. This tunnel is just about halfway between Elroy and Sparta.

Each of the tunnels on this trail seems to have its own character. Tunnel #2 is shorter than #3 but longer than #1. Actually they go in order from shortest to longest if you go numerically (which is the order if you were going west from Elroy to Sparta). Tunnel #1 is the shortest, #2 is in between and #3 is the longest.

You may not be able to see it well in the picture, but you CAN see through to the other end of tunnels #2 and #1 (at least if there is enough light). This is not the case with tunnel number 3. You actually need to go a ways into tunnel #3 before you see the light at the end of that tunnel.
