Elroy-Sparta Trail
Tunnel Number One to Kendall Depot

Looking out of tunnel #1 on the Elroy Sparta Trial (heading east). I love this view from inside the tunnel. This looks very similar to the views from the longer tunnels (#2 and #3) even though this is the shortest tunnel. It still gets totally dark and very cool as you pass through this tunnel.

A cyclist outside of tunnel #1. You don't get as much of the shimmer of light off the side walls of the tunnel as you get closer to the end of the tunnel.

Here's a view of tunnel #1 looking west after I had passed through the tunnel. This view of tunnel #1 also has it's own character and look. Tunnel #1 has more of a rock face on both ends (than the other 2 tunnels) and this side has a very clean and majestic look.

This is a little closer view of the tunnel as seen when heading west. You see the outside of this tunnel in many of the Elroy Sparta Trail photos that you see out on the internet but in many of the photos they do not specify exactly where they are or which tunnel the photo is of. As you can see, I like to give more detail on exactly where the photos are from and which tunnel I am photographing.

The bike trail headquarters at Kendall. Kendall is the last town that you go through (heading east on the ES trail) before you get to the trail head in Elroy.

You could also start your ride on the ES trail here. There is plenty of free parking in this area and you can purchase the Wis state trail passes here too. Personally I did not want to miss any of the trail so I rode the entire ES trail but if you want the condensed tour that lets you experience the trail and at least one of the tunnels, you could start here (in Kendall) and head west to tunnel #1 which is only about 3 miles from here.
