Elroy-Sparta Trail Photos
Approaching Tunnel #1

Passing by a miniature golf course beside the bike trail near Tunnel Trail Campground which is east of Wilton, Wis. as I continue my ride from Sparta to Elroy. This is just past the stables that you see from the trail.

Some of the lush green scenery along the path. The Elroy Sparta trail is all crushed stone, and was in pretty good shape on this ride. This particular area, like most of this trail is fairly wooded and shady.

Coming up to tunnel #1 which is the shortest of the three tunnels on the trail and is closest to the eastern trail head at Elroy. As with all the tunnels on the trail, it's pretty common to have streams of water on either side of the bike trail as you approach the tunnels on the downhill side.  

The entrance to Tunnel #1 on the Elroy Sparta trail. This is the entrance on the west side of the tunnel as seen when heading east on the ES trail (as I was for this trip). Each of the 3 tunnels have their own look and character. I really like the look to this tunnel. Tunnel #1 has much more of a rock wall face to it than the other tunnels. The moss covered rock extends above the tunnel and to both sides.

Here's a closer view of Tunnel #1. You can see to the other end of this tunnel and it seems to be in a little better shape than the other two tunnels. This one was completely dry when I passed through it.

One of the other things that I've noticed that all of the tunnels have are the doors to the tunnel. They were always open on my ride but I really wonder what they are used for and if they are ever closed. If the were closed I also wonder if it would even be possible to get to the other side somehow. Another really scary thought is how would you feel if you were inside the tunnel when the doors were closed!
