OK, here's the latest news on the Deer Grove Mountain trails, as of October 2006... All of the unpaved trails have been "upgraded" to crushed stone!!! I am not really sure if I consider this an improvement, but it has been done. The photo above is off of the paved "red trail" in Deer Grove East although most of the unpaved trails are in Deer Grove West.
For those of us who have ridden the Deer Grove bike trails (paved and unpaved) for years, this is quite a change. I actually just completed a set of bike trail photos on the unpaved trails in Deer Grove (used for biking and hiking). See the DG Mtn Photos link in the upper right column for the photos of the trails prior to this "upgrade".
Above is a picture of the yellow trail after the conversion to crushed stone... Now all of my previous pictures of the unpaved paths are just history...
These pictures (with the tractor) are from Deer Grove East (the paved loop that is so popular with joggers, roller bladers, walkers... OK, just about everyone on weekends and nice days).
This side is not quite done, but almost all of Deer Grove West is crushed stone now (except for a short section along Dundee road).
The unpaved trails in Deer Grove used to be mostly rocky dirt paths for hiking and biking with ruts and ravines and fallen trees that covered the paths at times. They are wider now and much better groomed with a crushed stone base.
This does make the trails easier to ride and more passable (even in bad weather) but it also takes away some of the fun in riding rugged trails that many other bikers would not even consider riding. I also see more people on these trails now, on nice day, so they are a little more crowded. Which is also good and bad too. Well, I guess there is no stopping "progress".
