Here's the Huntington / Freeman Road and Lakewood intersection just before the flooded area. If you want to go around the flood you can hop on to Huntington / Freeman here and go about 3/10 of a mile (north). You can get back on at the fire hydrant.
Here's the start of the flood on the Algonquin Road / Paul Douglas Bike Trail
You can see the center line under water, so I went through on this trip. It was probably 4 inches deep so my shoes got wet but that 's it.
This is looking back (south) on the bike trail flood.
Here's the top of the hill where you can get back on to the trail (or off if you are going the other way). It's where you have a fire hydrant and the hill sign (just north of the Lakewood intersection).
Here are my original notes from the trail flooding in spring of 2009.
I update the Bike Blog on this website more frequently with the latest flooding and bike trail conditions in general. I also have a Bike Blog Category specifically for Bike Trail Conditions that you can select in the category box (on the right).
Please see our Bike Blog Trail Conditions posts for the latest updates on the bike trails in our area.
3/18/09 - Some Flooding
I have just ridden the new Algonquin Road / Paul Douglas Bike Trail yesterday and after all the rain that we've had, and since the trail is still new (I guess they have some issues to work out), the west side of the trail has some flooding along Huntington / Freeman Road. It's not a long stretch but the flooding is pretty bad.
I tried to go through slowly, since I could still see the yellow center line, but it got too deep and wide and I chickened out! I got my feet wet turning around. It's just a small section that you need to take on Huntington / Freeman Road, and there is not much traffic there normally, so I would just take that little section on the road.
It's still a great trail and I'm the flooding will dry up soon and/or they will get it fixed soon, so enjoy the trail!
5/5/09 - Still Flooded
I just rode the trail again today and I was surprised that it was still flooded on the west Huntington / Freeman Road side. This time there was less water and I made it through and I also had my camera with me so this is where the photos above are from.
5/20/2009 - No Flooding
Just a quick update. I was just on the trail yesterday and there was no flooding. I looked around to see if they did any improvements (for the flooding) of if it just dried up. It looks like it just dried up so it could flood again the next time we have wet conditions.
7/27/2009 - Flooding Repairs Complete
On 7/15/09 parts of the new trail (around Paul Douglas and Crab tree Preserves) were closed for repairs. By the time I rode the trail on 7/27/09 the repairs were complete and they raised the trail in the flood areas and installed at least one drainage pipe under the trail.
Hopefully this will resolve the flood problems. Only time will tell.
4/2/2010 - Better, but still some flooding
I rode the trail on March 16th 2010 and the west side of the trail (next to Huntington / Freeman Road) was flooded (a little bit) again. The repairs did help because there was only a few inches of water and only for a few feet. It was not problem to ride through (slowly to avoid getting soaked).
This part or the trail was completely dry again a few weeks later. As of yesterday 4/1/2010, there was no flooding at all.
