This is the tunnel that you go through on the North Shore Trail heading east just before connecting to the Robert McClory Trail (which then becomes the Green Bay Trail as you continue riding south from this point).
I have also seen the trail that is now called the Robert McClory Trail (south of this intersection) referred to as the North Shore Bike Path but for consistency (and sanity) I have to stick with what they are calling this part of the trail now.
There part of the trail is almost like a little highway intersection, with on and off ramps, where the North Shore and Robert McClory Trails intersect. OK, maybe it's not that dramatic but it does feel a little like an expressway ramp (with much slower traffic).
OK, these photos revert back to our photo tour of the Green Bay, Robert McClory bike trail ride, which is why the trees just have buds and we have gone from summer to spring!
This shot (above) and the next one (below) are both on the (north/south) Robert McClory bike trail. The fenced in bridge is where the RMT goes over Scranton Ave (route 176) and where it intersects with the (east/west) North Shore Trail.
From here we continued on south to the Chicago Botanical Gardens (home of the "Flower Nazi" (they can be very biker unfriendly at the Botanical Gardens if you do not follow the rules VERY STRICTLY!)) and eventually to Glenview (via the North Branch Trail).
This part of the Robert McClory Trail has a mixture of wooded and open parts and runs parallel to Sheridan Road. The RMT merges into the Green Bay Trail south of here which then continues on all the way to Wilmette.
You can also take the RMT north all the way to Wisconsin if you'd rather go north (and don't mind going through North Chicago and Waukegan) or you can continue south from Wilmette on the Evanston Lakefront trail system into Chicago (and then on to the Chicago Lakefront Path (of you are really brave and energetic!).
